FINANCIAL,
Tho Srcrtisry p-rr-seuted tho following I ea-h statement to 24th October, 19G6: Ordinary account, credit £7316 16* 111 ; labor imj-rovr morn account, debit £5221 12s 21; credit £2122 4- 91. Bank : Ourr?nt account as por Bank pass book, credit £2122 4 1 9d ; loss unpresmtad o'arqars, ml ; credit, £2122 4t 9.1. Outstanding .• Arrears of n t «, 1903 (Euiopear), £ll9 4s 3d ; 1904 (European), £99 10a 3i ; 1905 (ivjropeirj. £402 12s 2d ; 1905 (Grown and Nativ*), £ll 13s 7d ; wharfage ( U-rcm), £24 17a ; rent, £49 lla 81. .Discussion arising out of the Overseer’s report took place on'thc question of a new footbrh Ige to Waikanac reclamation to be erected al a cost of 1:50, Several members thought this amount too large as the bridge was not used enough, and it was further pointed out that a lew piles put in for strengthening purposes would he suilicieut, The matter was ordered to stand over. The Chairman brought up the question of the wrought iron girders belonging to the big crane which the Council wanted for the Grey street bridge, and lie asked the Board to lix a price for them. Mr Whinray proposed that LlO be isked, exclusive of cartage, Mr Clark asked the weight, and what they were worth, The Chairman : They weighed 12 tons, md were worth nothing. ITe had tried to sell them, hut no one would buy them, Mr Clark objected to three Borough councillors’ disposing of the Board’s property, and suggested reliable opinion as to value of iron he obtained. It was finally decided to sell the girders to the Council for the price mentioned (B 10) on the understanding if same were worth more or less the price would be regulated accordingly, Mr Whmra.y’B notion cf motioD, to tfLci that tho Board ojn&ic’or tbe adtisv bill ty of acquiring under tbe Public Works Act tho piece of land from Messrs Bourko and Cods store to tbo Blip for the purposes of tho Board, then cocao on for di~cu“sinn
Mr Wbinray said ho thonght tho Board should acquire this land. Tnoy were very err.mpod for loom for wharves, ole,, and thrro was practically no room for any'iiieg, and bo llu ugh! ibo Board would do well to eacsidor Hue question, Mr Harding said though this was certainly tho time to acquire land, ho did not know the position of tho property msntioned, and ho thought the matter should stand over.
Captain Tuoker was adverse to acquir i"g any property in this manner, The B >hvd should Dot dream of attempting to tnki any land without first obtaining particulars as to the romunoraiion they would r ccivo by doing so, He instanced that in the caso of a voy small corner infringed 01 by the Government for railway pu - p:B08 Mr ShniJan had reoeivei T6QO c mpenaation. Too piseo mentioned by Mr Whinray wa3 many times larger, ond it would coat the Board on the valuation an enoimcus sum to acquire, He thought ibe matter should be held over for future ccnsidoratiou.
Mr Whinray said hia only desire was to call the attention of tbo Board to the matter. Ho was quite content to lot it stand over for future consideration.
