At the Polioo Court yesterday Alexander Johnston was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment for drunkenness, it beiog his third ofienoe within six months.. At a sitting of the Old Age Pensions Court yesterday Mr Barton granted a pension to a native for LIB a year, and 000 renewal for Ll 5, three for LlB, seven for L 26, and two for L 6. The result of tho St. John Ambulance Association’s nursing examination was received yesterday. The six ladies who entered passed well, the results being ns follows: Passed with honors, Miss B. Murray; passed in the first olass, Misses M. Beere, L. Coleman, A. G. Hair, L, Morgan, and G, Pyke. Mr A. F. Kennedy has received a very pleasant souvenir of the Gondoliers, in the form of a fioe enlargement of himself as Don Alhambra, the Grand Inquisitor, io costume. The presentation was made by Mr Zaohariah, on behalf of the male members of the cast.
The winner of Mr Lissant Clayton’s speoial prize of £2 2s to tho exhibitor winning the most number of points in prodnoe Glasses (faotory exhibits excepted) at the reoent show is Mrs A, Gordon with 9 points. • The runners-up were : A. F. Kennedy 8 points, H. Scragg 9, Wm. Pioken 5, and A. Bussell 5. A private telegram states that the Hon. J. Carroll is laid up with an attack of influenza, and has been ordered oomplote rest.
The District Coroner, Mr Bartoo, B.M. was yesterday informed of the sudden death of a halfoaste infant at Wairoa. As Dr, Sullivan, after examination, oould not oerlify as to the oeuse of death, an inquest was ordered, In eonsrquenee of the protracted illness of Mr A. Kioe, it has been suggested by the Friendly Societies’ Conference delegates that it would be a graoious thing to
tender a benefit to that gentleman as head of the Bioo Dramatic Company, who has given so much assistance to deserving looal object-. The matter has yrt to oome before the lodges, bat it is hoped that a most successful entertainment will be organised, for Mr Rioe’s services are heattly deserving of recognition, and in view of his unfortunate illness it would no doubt be more than ordinarily gratifying. The steamer Squall was berthed at tho wharf at 8.15 this morning. Mr W, Priestley, caretaker at the Park racecourse, has found a couple of valuable dogs in regard io which a notice is issued.

On Thursday afternoon next tli Turanganui Bowling Club open tliei season, when it is expected there will be a large gathering of members and thei friends, The green is looking in splendk order, and bids fair to outrival that of tin elder club. The green together with the grounds has been considerably improved since last season, and the committee intend to spare no effort in having the property ■up-to-date, 'The privacy of the grounds lias been secured by the erection of an iron fence fronting Childers Hoad, while necessary asphalting around the pavilion will tend toward the comfort of members. Arrangements for the opening are well forward, and members who wish tickets may obtain the same from the members of the committee.
