On tho eighth rink MoLaren was ably barked up, especially by Buchanan in third plsoo, and with a strong local team against ihtm tboy put up a fine oard. Similarly on No. 1 rbk Payno bad an outstanding viotory, his opponents being captained by Halts, a | Slate champion. At the outset the looal men played somewhat nervously, with the exception perhaps of No. 3, whore they got a heavy laad on Wheeler's leem. The latter, with a lot of ill Inck. seemed hopelessly beaten, but settling down to an uphill <»>k, they msde wh-t was a really sirvio at>ie rscovory. iMihcugh at tho finish the oard showed them elevin down, on the 18th head they werp 16 down. On No. 6 there was a great tusile. New Zealand having tho worst of it till the 12th head, when they crept up. They weie two Dp on the 22ad head, but dropped the advantage with three points extra on the concluding heads. Bou-kdl’s team on the oth rink made a dose finish, being one op, the lcoals coming on strongly from tho !S:h heal. Waddell on No. 7 held his opponents with easa right through. Do what he would Currie could never be sure of beating the Maorilanders as long as the la'ter bad a howl to send along. There wore limes when it was difficult to sav whether MeLaren or bis third man (Buobanan) Hi t better work. Payne, one of his rink, was only inferior to MoLaren.
