SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Committee of the District High Sohool was held last night. Present : Messrs J. Somervell (chairman), James Brown, W. J. Barlow, O. Nield, R. Johnston, G. Wildish, and G. Danon, also Mr F. J. Rcwley, head mßster, and Mr W. F, File, Beoretary. A circular letter and oopy of petition aod resolutions passed in favor of house allowance to first assistant masters of schools of grade 12 and higher from the Auckland Teaohers’ Association were read aod ordered to lie on the table. Three applications for the position of second assistant teacher hr>d been forwarded on by Napier Board, but owing to wroDg ored.ntiala being forwarded with One Bpplic-nou, the matter was not dealt with. It was decided that the Committee meet the Boaid of Governors on Monday week fo deal with this appointment, The Master (Mr Rowley) reported as follows;—"Toe following is my monthly report : Attendance lost month has averaged 831, or 86| per cant of the roll number, which at present is9sß. With regard to the broken pillar, Mr Nield said the gates were hung wrong, and unless they were put right, the pillars would always be broken. It was decided to refer this matter to the Board The accident was discussed and the Committee intimated that young children should not be allowed to use the giant strides. With regard to the absentee list, the Secretary was ordered to write for forms, I and when same were obtained, to notify parents that proceedings would be taken against them unless their children were sent to school. Mr Darton reported that a portion of the ground had been done up at a cost of | .£BS, a saving of £IC on tho £95 granted. There was still a great deal to be done. It was decided lo try and raise £SO, it beiDg pointed out that another £SO eub> sidy would be then forthcoming from the Board, end £IOO would complete the work. In order to raise the mousy ii was doeided to hold a floral fete on Novemoer 9sb, and a sub oammittse was formed to make arrangements and draw up a pro* gramme.
