Tho Amateur 0 peratic Society’ performance of Messrs Gilbert and Sullivan's charming comic opera “ The Gondoliers,” which has been in active rehearsal for the past four months, will be produced next week for a season of four nights, commencing on Tuesday and continuing until Friday next. Unusual interest has been ma-
nifested in the production, and the forward booking is all that the management could desire. Already the financial success of the show is assured, but as it is the aim of the management to present a first-class performance rather than to establish a heavy surplus, the public may rest assured that they will see a performance of superior calibre to anything hitherto attempted by amateurs in this district. The scenery, costumes, limelight and mechanical effects have seldom been surpassed by the best professionals, whilst the orchestra is of such a strength that no travelling company could afford to carry. The principals and chorus have all entered most heartily into their work, and have made themselves thoroughly acquainted with the task before them. The various marches, drilling, and groupings have been practised most assiduously, and it is safe to predict that the chorus movements will prove most attractive features of the opera.
