NEW ZEALAND DEFEATED BY SYDNEY SUBURBS.

PRESS ASSOCIATION - COPYRIGHT Reoeived 10.19 p.m., Oot. 18. Sydney, Oat. 18.

The Now Zealanders suffered defeat in tbe two four-rink matches against Peterebam and Asbfield, at tbe farmer piece. Tbe looal team included three inter-State players, and was a very strong combination altogether. Sneddon's rink, which performed very webkiy at Maitland, was tbe oauee of the visitors’ downfall at Petersham. The other three rinks were twelve up at tbe fiaish, but Sneddon finished seventoon down. Bouskill brought his game along strongly, and although Wheeler's rink had the worst of it in tbo first ceuple of hours, they played so excellently uphill that they finished level. Waddell’s riok played a good steady game. The scores were BasiDgs, Court, Ksast, Sneddon, 17 ; Petersham, 84.

Scott, McGibbon, Giilies, Wheeler, 25 Petersham, 25.

Askhurst, Lefevre, Dali, Bonekill, 25 ; Petersham, 18, Bee, Short, Hancock, Waddell, 23 ; Petersham, 18. Totals—Petersham, 95 ; New Zealand, 90.

The game against Ashfiold was very oloßely-oonnsted. For tho visitors Blaok and Reid played a groat leading game, The looal team was a good one, including two members of the inter-State team. For tho best part of the game the scorers ran neok and neck. Then Ashfield got a lead and maintained it to tbe fiaish. When the last round started New Zealand bad eight down, reducing the deficit by a oouple. The scores were :

Black, Osmond, Taylor, Manning, 24 : Asbfield, 20. Ledingbam, Mowlew, Marsden, Rankin, 17 ; Ashfield, 29. Reid, JaokaoD, Smith, Payne, 26 ; Asbfield, 27.

Buohanan, Maclean, 23 ; Asbfield, 19. Totals—Ashfiold, 95 ; New Zealand, 90,

As a seven-rink team tbe visitors would bo reasonably strpng, but as an eight-rink team has an element of weakness which may have its effeot in the inter Stale match.
