EAST COAST NEWS.

POD AW A. WWI-I (From Our Own Correspondent.) Oct. 15. The Whangara native school inspection took place on Monday, when the inspector, Mr Porter, expressed himself as thoroughly satisfied with tho results. Mr Fraser, the teacher, presented a full attendance to the examiner, and had not a single failure, which speaks volumes for the care and attention bestowed by him on the youngsters, and also for tho aptitude of the scholars themselves. The children are to be treated to a picnic on Friday next, which it is hoped they will enjoy to their hearts’ content.

TE ARAROA. flwafer-fr"* From Our Own Correspondent.)

Uct. 12. We are at last having a little good

spring weather, and tho growth in grass and appearance of the slock are benefiting thereby. As I predicted we have had a rather miserable September. There was a good deal of cold weather, and the rainfall for the month reached the respectable total of 12.17 inches, rain falling on 23 days. Docking i 3 in full swing, and in spite of the bad weather the nurnbor of lambs is well up to the average. The percentages so far are good, in a few cases coming up to over the 100 per cent., although others report having raihor poorer per eeutages. Docking over the next thing to be thinking of ia sheaving, and I see that one settlor, to keep up with the times, is enlarging aud altering his woolshed and putting ia shearing machines for this year; it is a good sign, aud shows how our little district, although rather out of the way, is progressing and improving.

Another good sign is that of the surveyors laying off and preparing contracts for the formation of our roads, and it looks moro like business when cue sto3 guaga pegs, otc., put in along the present track, which is quite inadequate for the amount of traffic it ha 3 to carry. The long looked-for loan has at last, after a good deal of agitating, been granted, so the Council are making tho most of it, and have started to work straight away. 1 hear on good, authority that our local hotel is to change hands shortly, the present proprietor giving the business up and taking to tho land. Ho intends to reside on the station in which he has been a partner for some considerable time.

WATPIRO BAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Oct. 14. The weather is again fine after a very long spell of showery weather. Docking on all the Coastal stations is about at an end, and tho percentage of lambs has been extremely good. Shearing will be the next order of the day, and will most likely commence in about a fortnight from now. It is rumored that Detective Broberg has been getting in some good work lately in connection with the Maori fugitive, and that it is possible this month will see Hare Matenga inja tight corner. Sheepfarmers, contractors and others employing labor have considerable difficulty in securing men. However, it is supposed that as soon as the bushfelling is completed the present scarcity of labor will bo considerably lessened.
