PARAKAIO MURDER.
A SUSPECT DETAINED. PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT Reoeivod 10.37 p.m., Oct. 10. Sydney, Oct. 10. Detectives, at tbe instanoe of tho New Zealand police, searched the steamer Moereki for the murderer of the eohool* master near Oamaru on the 2nd inst., but found no traoe of him. PRESS ASSOCIATION Oamatu, last night. The police have detained a man named J. D Findlay in conneotion with the Papakaio murder osbp. They will give no. information on the subject, but the man is known to baye beon about the neighbor* hood for some time before and after the murder of Rennie. Ho told some people that be was a baker, and others that he was a cook who ran away from the steamer j Port Stepbons when she was in port. As a matter of fact, the man detained came from the South, and made application to the Canterbury Land Board for a section of land. The police records show that he has tetved sentences for houee-breaking, etc., but the fact that be has only been detained and not arrested may mean that tbe police have nothiog muoh to go on. As they are very reticant nothing oan be gathered that is not mere rumor.
