HOSPITAL SOCIAL.

A MOST SUCCESSFUL GATHERING,

Favored with a fine evening there was a largo and representative attendance at the Hospital Social held last night in tho New Zealand Shipping Co.’s commodious wool store. Whilst hard to estimate tho attendance might be reasonably set down at eight hundred, and tho arrangements made by the committee left nothing to bo desired. Tho decorations were carried out on an elaborate scale. This department was in the hands of Mr H. Withers who left nothing undone, to beat all previous records. An abundant supply of fernery and foliage, for which thanks is chiefly due to Messrs C Ncenan and A, Tuohy, was forthcoming, and with the other offerings a brilliant show was made, The material chiefly used wero tree ferns, pungas, karaka, rewarewa and cedar, and those with the grand show of flags and bunting produced an excellent effect. Tho flags were kindly lent by the Union 8 S. Company, Gisborne eheepfarmers and Harbor Board. The floor, always an essential feature at a social, was controlled by Mr W. Webb, whose arrangements left nothing to be desired. Arrangements wero made with Dr. Sattumaahor for tho use oi his motor car, and under the careful engineering of driver Baunerman a "clean sweep ” was soon made. Tho Refreshment Committee, whoso arrangements were per. sonally supervised by Mr J, A. HerdiDg, had everything right up to date, and added a substantial sum to tbs prooeeds of the social. Tae supper tables were most artistically laid. Pretty palm?, foliage, and red and white fl ewers formed the chief decora ions, and with an abundant tupply of the good things of life everyone preeent was more than satisfied. The supper was provided by a strong commilteo of ladies, Mesdames Nolan and Townley boiDg the chief organisers. The music of the Guy Band, under Bandmaster Fickferd, was greatly appreciated, and Miss Moore's capable orohestra played a number of appropriate selections. In their respective positions of joint secretaries Messrs J. H. Wauohop and J. R, Little more than fi led tbo bill, and the great financial success of the social must bo highly satisfactory to them. The programme, which was carefully arranged, contained twenty four dance?, and mast of tho items were rendered to popular music provided by the City Band under Bandmaster lhckford, the extras beiDg played by Miss Moore’s orohestra. Messrs M. Craig, W. Webb, W. Miller, H. M liar, J. A, Harding, A. Sawyer, and T. G- lawless made most efficient masters of ceremonies. Dancing was continued with spirit until an early hour this morning.

To-night is reserved for tho children, when there is every promise of a largo gathering. Tho chi dren will hold the floor until 10 o’clock, after wbioh hour the adults will take possession, A very large attendance is anticipated.
