A CLASHING OF DATES. Special to the Titue.-t. Wellington, last night.
In regard to tho protost of tho Caledonian Society against any special grant being made in aid of tho Highland games to be hold in connection with the Exhibition at Christchurch on next New Year's day and following days, seeing that such assistance rendered to a comparatively new society is likely to prejudicially affect the annual Now Year's gatherings in other parts of the colony, Sir Joseph Ward said that he lias made strong representations to the Exhibition Commissioners, urging them to endeavour to have a different arrangement, so as not to conflict with the other Caledonian Societies Tho Commissioners inform mo that they have made every effort to induce tho Christchurch Society to change their dato, but without success. In regard to tho alleged attempt by tho Standard Oil Company to corner tho Taranaki oil wells, the Premier says lie has noticed what has been reported regarding this matter, and should oil bo found in sufficient quantities the Government will take care that tho interests of the colony arc protected, and the full benefit to the public obtained.
