Weßtport last night,
At a largely attended publio meeting in the Town Hall to nigbt, a motion by Mr F. F. Monro, urging the Government to make the We9tport Harbor Board eleotive or partly so was carried unanimously. Mr Munro went into the question st considerable length, pointing oat whero he oonsidered the present nominee Board had failed, and the advantages likely to aoorne from a Board whose members were resident in the town and chosen as representatives of the ooal mining, the shipping, and the general interest respectively. Wellington, last night.
To-night’s Gazette contains notices prohibiting the importation of pear trees from North Amerioa, also the introduction into the colony of potatoes infected with potato moth.
Auckland, last night. At a well attended demonstration organised by the Y.M.O.A. speeohes were delivered by ministers and laymen. The following resolutions were oarried : —(1) That the Postmaster-General be nrged to discontinue the praotioe of establishing telegraph and telephone offioes on or near racecourses duriDg the holding of raoe meetings ; (2) that it is desirable that a more exaot definition of the word " plaoe” be enacted for the purpose of suppressing betting as far as possible ; (3) that in the interests of the young people of the colony this meeting oonsiders it is of vital importance that legislation be introduced immediately having the eflsot of making gambling by means of the totalisator illegal, and of prohibiting the publication of betting news.
