An accident, which nearly terminated in serious iojuries to a Maori, happened in front of the Masonic Hotel in Lowe street on Saturday afternoon. The Maori, who was driving towards Gladstone road, encountered a horse aitaohed to a trap that had got out of hand and was just making up its mind to bolt. Colliding with tho Maori’s four-wheeled buggy, the vehiole was overturned and the Maori deposited under the upturned wheel on the road, while his horse was thrown down also. Thus impeded, the would-be runaway was at onoe secured by a plucky bystander, while others rushed in and released the Maori, an old man, who, contrary to expeclations, was found to have suffered nothing moro than a shaking, and the only damage done was the breaking of the hind axle of the buggy in whioh the old man was sitting.
