R. E. Lindsay, recalled, stated that water accumulated in the hole and had to be baled out from time to time. This might take about three minutes. After a retirement the jury brought in the following verdict: ‘ That the deceased, while peforming his duty in letting off the water from the main gas pipe, was overcome by noxious fumes, and so met his death.” A rider was added that the Company should arrange some less dangerous method of letting off the water.
