LATE NEW ZEALAND.
PRESS ASSOCIATION Wellington, last night, Joe Dranefield, who was for many years one of tho leading citizens of Wellington, died here, aged 81 years. Deceased came to Wellington in the early days from Australia, and oarried on business here until ill-health compelled his retirement into private life. In 1870, when the affaire of the district ceased to be administered by a Town Board, ho was olected Mayor of Wellington, and held offioe for four consecutive terms, being succeeded in 1874 by the late Mr 0. B, Borises, Mr Draosfield agiin stood for the Mayoralty in 1878, and was returned. He wae reeleoted in 1879, but only oooupied the position until 9th May of that year, when he resigned, Hokitika, last night. In the Supreme Court this afternoon Geo. Bidgood was found guilty of common assault on Margaret Kathleen Boarko at Greymouth, and sentenced to 12 months. In the oaae of A. H. John, charged with selling two tickets in a Pakapoo lottery to H. O’Loughlin, the jury disagreed, and a new trial was ordered next day.
