London, Sept. 18. A man named Shaw, arrested at Santiago on a charge of emblez/.ing nine thousand pounds from tho firm of Noyes Bros, engineers, Sydnoy, has arrived at Liverpool, en route to Sydnoy. Shaw was bookkeeper to the firm, and absconded to Chili. Sir Francis Lugard has resigned tho High Commissionorship of Northern Nigeria. Ten members of a secret society of Southern Nigeria, implicated in the Agbor rising, have been sentenced to death, and forty have boon deported to Wrstoru India, including the King of Owa.
Brussels, Sept. 18. Wool-washors at Verviers, Belgium, have struck, owing to details of the apportionment of work in the slack soason not being acceptable. The textile manufacturers thereupon decided on a general lock-out, throwing twenty thousand men idle.
Constantinople, Sept. 18. Turkey has granted the Smyrna™ Aidin railway a fifty years’ prolongation of its concession, also the right to extension of tho line to Lakes Egardir and Buldur. This great success is due to the action of Sir Nicolas O’Connor, British Ambassador. Melbourne, Sept. 19.
Mr Groom has introduced in the House of Representatives a Bill dealing with foreign life insurance companies. It requires that deposits of two-thirds of the present valuo of existing policies in the companies shall be retained in Australia.
The State Government is preparing a scheme to secure a million acres in
the Western district for comprehensive closer settlement operations. Adelaide, Sept. 19.
The Assombly rejected the Council’s amendments to the Franchise Bill, the Labor party and Liberal party supporting the Government in resisting them.
Hobart, Sept. 19’ In the debate on the financial position of Tasmania, Mr McOoll advocated payment of a fixed subsidy by the Commonwealth, with an additional amount to those States where primary industries predominated, as against manufacturing industries. Unless the financial position was faced, ho said, Tasmania would have to ask for special assistance from the Commonwealth.
