A new electric lamp, whioh threatens to revolutionise the present system of lighting by means of the eleotrio current, has b ee devised by an Austrian chemist—Dr. Hans Kuzel—who has spent many years in studying the principle involved in bis invention. He has succeeded in devieiDg a lamp whioh he calls the Syrius lamp, and which promises to reduoe the prios of eleotrical lighting to a wonderful degree. As is well known, incandescent gas lighting is much cheaper than electric light under the present Bystems, because the filament wires of the lattor are very expensive, and the glass bulbs soon wear out in service. Dr. Kuzel has invented a substitute for the glow thread, by forming out of oommon aDd oheap metals BDd metalloids colloidß in a plastic mass, which can be handled like clay, and whioh, when dry, become as hard as 9tone. Out of this mass very thin wire threads are then shaped, whioh are of uniform thioknoss and of great homogeneity, These two characteristics are of great value in the technios of incandesoent lamps. The Kuzel or Syrius lamp requires soaroely one«quarter of the electrlo ourrent whioh the ordinary eleotrio lamp with a filament wire requires. Experiments have Bhown, it is asserted, that the new Syrius lamp can burn for 8500 hours at a stretch. Another advantage claimed for the Syrius is that the intensity oi the light always remains the same, the lamp bulbs never becoming blackened, asist the oase with the ordinary bulb. One of the most serious sheep worry ing cases on record occurred on M Alexander Beange’s Oware Bank Farm (says the Wyndham Herald). Mr Beange had some 720 breeding ewes, and of this number only 200 can now be found alive, so that over 400 have been destroyed, apparently as the result of worrying by dogs. The flock was evidently caught in a corner where the Oware stream intersects the land, and the frightened animals rushed over the bank to a wholesale death, by smothering and drowning. In one hole 125 carcases were found, and 70 were found on Mr 0. Muir’s, a mile down stream. Carcases were seen in the Wyndham River, a distance of five miles away, and a great many more must have been carried by these tributary streams into the Mataura. The carcases recovered are being skinned, and the value of the skins will go in reduction of the loss; but, making every allowance, Mr Beange’s loss must be between £SOO and £6OO.
