Sir W. Lyne, explaining the preference proposals, said Australia had not asked for any reciprocity from Britain, Ho claimed nothing oould more help to bring a white population here than trade treaties, Mr Joseph Cook declared the proposal was nothing but a ounningly devised system of protection to Australia, without giving the slightest benefit to Britain. The Government's object was to keep protection for Australia against any and every part of the Empire. Mr Chamberlain’s idea was inter-imperial freetrade. Sir W. Lyne’s general resolution testing the feeling of the House in favor of preference was carried on the voices^
