The settlers in this district are fully alive to the advantages of tho telephone service. Every house in Hangaroa, Tiniroto, Ruakitiri, Te Aroha, and in the vioioity of Parikanapa is now oonneoted with the telephono service. In 1900 the messages at the Hangaroa telephono bureau averaged about one per day; tho service has sioadily grown until the average has run up to about 200 pet week. At a meeting of tho Feilding Boiough Council an opinion was received from Messrs Bell, Myers, acd Bell that the agroemont with the gasworks company for tho sole right to supply gas to private consumers was void, that power only being granted by Act of Parliament, and the Counoil’s right to enter into such an agreement being limited to publio supply, snob as lighting the streets. The Council contemplate acquiring the gasworks, and this opinion considerably strengthens their hands in thß negotiations.

The Auokland City Oounoil meet'mg has decided to take over the rpfuse destructor, the Mayor remarking : 11 We shall have no further occasion, I hope, for having to trouble the HaurakiGulf with our rubbish, so that notice of motion need not be made in the House of Representatives. Further additions are almost every day being made to the number of business premises in the town. It was resolved to ask Mr Carroll to make the Parliamentary parly as representative of the colony as possible, and to seek to obtain the presence of all warships ia New Zealand waters. A epeoial meeting of the Gisborne Sohool Oommittea was held last evening. Present: Messrs J. Somervell (ohairman), Wildish, Nisbett, Johnston, Barlow, and Oolley. Tho Education Board forwarded names of applicants for the position of first assistant in the secondary department, and submitted (he names of Messrs J. Kiodor (Gisborne), H. Rabson (Oust), and H. R. Bowatev (Carnarvon) in order of merit for the Committee’s selection. After the testimonials had been read Mr Colley proposed, Mr Wildish seconded, and it was resolved to recommend the appointment of Mr Kinder, the reoommendation to be sent to the High Sohool Board of Governors. The sub-committee ro the new desks reported that theyhad arranged to have the majority of the alterations suggested by the Committee effeoted without further cost, Disoussion took plaoe in regard to the best means of increasing the attendance in the secondary sohool. Mr Darton remarked that out of an attendance of about 1000 pupils thero were only 20 boys and 15 girls attending the secondary school. One-third of the children were in the preparatory classes, It was ultimately decided to oonfer with the High Sohool Board of Goveruors on the subject;

In his repok Constable McLeod of Tolago Bay stated: “The enforcing of see. 46 of the Licensing Act Amendment, 1904, ' will prove a great benefit to the Maoris, and will be a step towards safe-guarding the women and children who were sometimes sufferers in the past by bottles of liquor being, taken borne to the pahs by the men.” The Chairman warned licensees that they must keep the back premises of their hotels in proper order, and not wait for the constable to come round before doing necessary work.
