William Scjit, a bookmaker, was ebarged at the Magistrate's Court to-day with laying t:t r odds with Henry Brierly at Ricoarton on August 14tb. Brierly and Scott’s clerk gave evidenoe for the prosecution. Counsol for the defonoe contended that no proof of tote odds bad been gi\en, tho witnesses for the prosecution admitting there was a specified limit to the olds, whoreas tote odds were unlimited. Judgment was reserved.

At ihe Magistrate’s Court, Motueka, John McNab, cf Riwalis, was fined £1 and costs for killing a sea leopard. Defendant was infoimed that a marine animal, presumably a sea), was stranded in a oreek near Iho Riwaka whatf, and found it wounded, but it showed fight, and he knocked it on tho henh It was afterwards from tho description deemed a eea hepard, but the skin was sold to a hotelkeeper. Toe question fir settlement now is to whom does tbo skin belong, to the purchaser, or is it confiscated as illegally taken ?
