HUIA V. GISBORNE A DRAWN GAME.

The Hu ! a Ladiea’ Hockey Olub played their first match against the Gisborne ladies at the Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon. There was splendid weather and a very large attendance. The teams were as follows Huia : Goal, Miss M. Morrison ; fallbacks, Misses J. MoMiohael and L. Lopdell ; halves, Misses Mary MoMichael, B, Bundle, and G. Morrison ; forwards, Misses Niven (oaptain), M. Niven, A. Hollis, M. Willis, and K, Nicoll. Gisborne : Goal, Miss Sawyer ; fallbacks, Misses Johnson and Wallis; halves, Misses Matthews, Y. Sherratt, and W. Reynolds (captain) ; forwards, Misses A, DaLaotour, Sherratt (2), Wachsmann, and Goffe. From the bally-off it was seen that the game was going to be a fine one, and so it proved. Miss DaLautour was too quiok with her stick for her opponent, and generally managed to get the beßt of the bully, and being well assisted by Misses Waohsmann and Sherratt, they were a souroe of annoyance to the opposing oacks. From a determined rally by the local forward*, who followed up and passed nicely. Miss Waohsmann got the ball within the circle, and bad a shot at goa'. The umpire was not in a position to see whether tho ball weDt between the pests or not, there being no nots, but as tho Gisborne ekipper considered the ball went outside, the ball was buUied-ofi from the ‘25. Good hitting by Misses Rundtr, McMiohael, and Nicoll gave tho Huia skipper an opening, aud hitting with judgm=nt, carried the ball right between the po:ts, whtre M ss Sawyer, the Gisborne goal-keeper, saved. From a corner bit Mias McMichsel oleared her line, and being well assisted by Missea linndlo and Lopdel l , carried play to Osntre. The good play of the visitors was rendered ineffective by the clean, forcible bitting of the full-backs, Misses Johnson and Wallis, the former especially getting in some splendid shots. They trusted too much to their sticks and did not use their hands enough. A mistake by Miss Johnson in in this respect gave tho Huia captain another opportunity which she was quick to seize, carrying the ball to tho goal. Miss Sawyer was again equal to the occasion, and as Miss Niven made the shot at goal she fell before it and the ball cannoned behind. ,Thc Gisborne goal keeper was loudly cheered for her plucky play, whilst the visiting captain came in for a fair share of the applause for her fine play. Misses Matthews, Sherratt, and Reynolds wero conspicuous in a fine passing dash. The local players were hooping their places better and showed good combination, but their individual play was not as good as the visitors, who were very quick getting on to the ball and more resourceful than the local girls. With a well judged hit Miss Goffe centred to Miss Sherratt, who sent it on to Miss Wachsmann in the circle. The Gisborne ladies pressed their opponents hard, but the Huia goalkeeper, . Miss Morrison, sent the ball clear with a most effective stroke. Neither aide had much of an advantage duriDg the remainder of the epell, which was ma:ked by dean, accurate bitting, atd fast forward rushes. The second term started in favor of the local girls, whose passing and centring was very o’ever. They attacked strongly, and the Huia defence was taxed to the utmost. Corner bits were the order of the day, and from several of these Misees Sherratt, Wactsuann, and DeLiutonc made strenuous efforts to get a shot home. The Huias proved themeelves as good in defensive tactics as thev were pn attack.

| and although tho groator part of tho spoil , was played within tho oirolo and itsonviron- ( monts, oho Gisborno girls failed to sooro. They had somo strong shots at goal, and n vory hot 000 from Mibs Wuohsmann was brilliantly fioldod by Miss MoMiohaol, vvl o cleared the oirolo with n forcible stroke. Mistos Willis, Niooll, M. Nivon, Hollir, and Morrison woro insu-umontnl in tomoving tho seono of hostilities to tho othor end of tho ground, but tho looal cnptniu, Miss Reynolds, ami Mis 3 Y. Slierratt with nice stick work put tho visitors onco mere on tho dofonsivc. All thoir efforts to bronk down tho Huia dofeneo proved unavailing, and although Gisborno had sovoral apparent easy ohatioes to shoot tho I ball through, they did not mauago to do so, and tho whiailo sounded without eitbir I side having rogistorod a goal, I Tho gamo was undoubtedly one of tho best Indies’ matohoa Boon in Gisborno, iho I Lrtn Bhown by tho playois of both clubs I being of a high standard. Tho visitors I woro inoliuod to play too rnuoh on thoir I

own aooouut, and did not hit hardonough. Their oaptain, when she got down under tho opposing goal with only tho goalkeopor in front, made tho mistake of trying to tap tho ball past hor, instead cf shooting it at the goal with ail tho force at her oommand. The looal girls might havo soored from somo of tho oorner hits

had they allowed one player to stop tho I ball and anothor to tako tho shot. A lilt-'e over eagornoes onoe or twioe when it oamo to tho question who should take tho shot at goal accounted for one or two likely sooroe. Too hitting of tho looal full-backs and of Miss MoMiohaol for tho Huias was of groat advantago to tbo'r respective aides. Tho Huia full-backs played too far back wbou thoir side whs attacking, Tho halves on both sidos woro I olcvor and safe, and fed thoir forward* Well.

Mr O'Donnell controlled the gome, and Messrs Dods and Garrett oarried tho line flags. The Huia ladies play tho High School girls this afternoon,
