The Canterbury Grocers’ Industrial Uoioa cf Employer?, at a meeting last night, resolved that this Union enters ihe strongest protest against the sweepirg unjustifiable remarks made by the member for Area in the House that tho retail trade v, as guilty of the practice of giving shoit weights. It considers such a statement absolutely untrue, and that the Christchurch retail trade is conducted in au honest and straightforward manner. Copies of the resolution are to be forwarded to Mr McGowan and all the Canterbury members. DunediD, Saturday. A motormaD, John Whitehouse, while lookiDg round, received a severe blow on the back of the head by oomiDg in contact with a side pole, and waa rendered unconscious for an hour, The car overshot tho ter minus two car-lc-ngibs over the road, and Whitehouse narrowly escaped death, as his head and body hung loosely over the side of the oar while passing two more poles.

A meeting was held here last night un* dor the auepices of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union to consider the establishment of the ilax growing industry in the district It was decided to urge the farmers to plant waste lands with flax, and to approach the Department of Agriculture with a view to obtaining the assistance of a libro expert later on to deliver lectures. Palmerston X., Saturday. In the Supreme Court this morning Whelan came up for sentence on a charge of assaulting Patrick Ashe at Awahuri on August sth. The Chief Justice said he did”not know what to do with the prisoner. He would not grant probation, also he could not impose a heavy sentence without depriving him of a chance of obtaining a pension. After pointing out the seriousness of the offence, he said he would deal rather leniently with prisoner, and sentenced him to three months’ hard labor. Wellington, Saturday. The amount added to reserve by the Bank of Australasia is thirty thousand pounds.
