To the Editor Gisborne Times.,
Sir, — 11 Comparisons are odious,” is an old maxim, but allow me to make a few, Io referenoe to your oritic'sms on tho rep. footballsrs wbiob appeared in Thursday morning's issue, I cannot allow the statement that Mr Parker Turei is the best forward the Bay has turned out without challenging it, and I am certain most footta'lers who have followed tho game for years past will agree with me. Mr James Poynler, of Te Karaka, stands over them all, and that player would have in form lest Pa-ker Tuiei in any department of the game. lam well awaro it is difficult to oompare old timers with the modern players, However, in the opinion of Mr Logan, of Hawke’s Bay, considered one of tho best judges of football in Now Zealand, Mr Poynter was one of the best forwards in the North Island, and on his recommendation was selected for the North Island team. At the same time we had a New Zealand rep, playing for the Bay, Messrs Frank Bailey, Pet, r Richardson, Reg Oaulton, and Jos. Martin, who were class enough to play for Auckland, and later the names of Messrs R. C. Murphy, Moana, and Hatea, when in firstform were, in my opinion, more than the equal of your selected, and, with the exception perhaps of Mr R. 0. Murphy, learnt the game in the Biy. TbaokiDg you in ant : c‘p rtion. —I am, elo„ COMPARISON.
