In a long articlo on the passing of the cross-country event, the Auckland Steeplechase, “ I’haeton ” writes : The only two horses that succeeded in performing what might be termed “ the hat trick,’’ in winning the two hurdle races and the Auckland Steeplechase, are Uranus and Despised. A bit of the lanky sort, it was a popular opinion that the Ellorslio hill would find Uranus out; but the manner in which ho won his race placed his critics completely out of court. Despised will always have a place with the sensational performers that have won distinction over fences in New Zealand, and the interesting fact that was emphasised as a result of the jumping races decided at Ellerslie in the summer of 1593--T is that the oneeyed eon of Cap a pie was well entitled to the surprise victory wdiich he brought about in the Great Northern Steeplechase, for the treble was landed under the respective imposts of 12st, 12st Gib and list 111 b. Cannongato, who won in 1901 and 1903, and who takos rank with Perfume and The Agent as a dual winner, may be assigned a place with the good horses that have had their names enrolled amongst the winners of the Aucklaud Steeplechase, and though Levanter, who won in 1897, is only with the single winners, so far as tho Auckland Steeplechase is concerned, the Oaptivator gelding won so many times on the Ellerslie course that he can appropriately be included amongst tho meet noteworthy winners. In considering Auckland Steeplechase contests, we have this statement before us that in the 32 races that eventuated 29 different horses have a place on the winring list.
