Tho Hastings branch of tho Now Zealand Bannovs’ Union passed the following resolution : “ That the now land proposals of tho Government are unsatisfactory and tho cause of much discontent amongst farmers, who are of tho opinion tnat the Government might have taken some noti o of the Farmers’ Unions’ desires by giving the option of acquiring tho freehold, oven in a few cases.” 'Hie opinion was expressed that tho proposals constilu’ed tho greatest victory for tho single tax ever achieved in the colony, as it was the greatest slap in the face the Farmers’ Union had ever received, Wellington, last night. Tho annual report of the Wellington Woollen Company statosthat after writing off /LOOO for depreciation, tho directors recommond a further dividend of 2-J per cont., making 5 per cent, for tho year, and to carry forward £2OIB. Tho very high price ruling for raw material, which had inilitatod against the industry in the two previous yoars, was accentuated during the past year. Tho foliowiug changes iu tho Prisons Departin'.nt havo been decided upon: Gaoler Armstrong, of Invercargill, is to bo gaoler at Wellington ; Gaoler Boynton, of Hokitika, to bo gaoler at Invercargill; Chief Warder Ironside, Auckland, to bo gaoler at Hokitika; Principal W. rlou iScanlau, Auckland, to be Chief Warder at Auckland. Several grocers wore lined 20s and costs this morning for failing' to have the fact that they held bottle licenaes priuted ovr the dco.’a of their premises. Those were the first prosecutions of the kind thxt have taken place here
Invercargill, last night. Pome three months ago £ 120 was stolen from the guard’s van between Eivertcn and Olautau, but an enquiry failed to elucidate the mystery, though suspicions fell on a certain official. The whole of the money was found concealed at the root of a tree near Thornbury railway station. Owing to the close wa’ch kept by the police the thief apparently got no chance to re* move it. So far no arrest has been made.
