PRESS ASSOCIATION Dunedin, last night. The Bruoe County Oounoil, which desires to be constituted a separate hospital and oharitable aid distriot, hopes to turn the proposal for a Seddon memorial to aooount, and if successful in getting a Btll through Parliament the district hospital will be oallcd the Seddon Memorial Hospital.
At a meeting of the Shipwreck Relief society, it was resolved to vote £is to the fuua which is being raised at Gisborne for tbe late Captain Nioolas, of the Aotea, The question of taking steps w people of Auckland and Wel-togion to form committees to assist the Society in i: a philanthropic work was discussed, the general opinion being that probably it was os well to allow the So. oiety to go on as at present, meeting minor claims, and trusting to the praottoai sympathy of the people of the colony if any great shipping disaster takes plaos.' It was ment oaed that so far tbe Seamen’s Union had done nothing to assist the Ss« oiety in its woik.
At a meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery Mr Nisbet moved that it is desirable a scheme providing for limited tenure of omoe and compulsory retirement for all elders of the Church, ruling and teaching alike, be introduced, but whereas in oases of teaching, elders’ oompulsory retirement at a specified age would lead to great | hardship unless oarefully safeguarded, the establishment of au adequate superannuation fund must be regarded as an essential part of such soheme. The Presbytery therefore suggests that the Assembly set U P a oommittee to consider the whole matter, and work out praotioal details. By 19 to 3 an amendment was oarried remitting the whole matter to a oommittee to oonsidsr and report (0 a speoial meeting of the Presbytery.
