LAND QUESTION.
PO3SIBILITIE3 REGARDING A DISSOLUTION.
{Special to Gisborne Times.) Wellington, last night. The land proposals of tho Government ooDtinue to be a good deal discussed. The other day I mentioned that a northern oity member who supports the Government was oue of their strongest opponents on this question The member
referred to is Me B mate, and he informs mo that there is no! the slightest objection to my mentioning his nam?, as be always consist-.ntly advocated the freehold system of land settlement. Indeed he believes it is oo'y by this tenure that tho remaining Crown lands in Auckland provincial district can be s it’sfactorily settled, and that tbe progress of the district and of Auokland oity itself would be materially ritarded by tbe present Government proposals. Another pr.mrnent Gavaromeot sup porter to whom I spoke to-dsy says tbo land proposals will moan the downfall oi tho Ward Ministry.
I do not anticipate, however, that any serious attempt will be made to pass the Land Bill this session. On pointing this out to tho member referred to, and suggesting that in the interval between this and next session tho Government might educate people in the country to such an extent that they might agree to the proposals, he said that was not at all possible, because tho mind of the country was already made up on that question It has been stated, apparently with a view to frightening some of the members who are not sure of their seats into voting for the proposals, that in the event of their being defeated oil tho land proposals, Sir Joseph Ward would seek a dissolution and go to the country on the issue. There is however no warrant for tho statement, because if on such a question a Ministry were defeated, the member who moved the amendment: or the leader of the Opposition would of a certainty 7 be sent for by tho Governor, and ho would have his chance of forming a new Ministry. It would be the new Premier who would be entitled to a dissolution,
