POLITICAL NOTES.
CHAIRMANSHIP OF COMMITTEES
(Special to Gisborne Times.) Wellington, last night. The e'eot'on of Chairman of Committees, wh oh took plaoe this afternoon, resulted in the placing of the Government romiuoe (Mr R MoKerzb) in the chair by a majority of 1-1 votes over Sir Wm. Steward. The question of plaojtiog the disappointed aspirants for the prsition is one that would appear to bo giving tbo Gavernmen) some concern. I bear that several members on the Government side of tbo House bavo been sounded on a proposal to eppoiut three deputy chairmen, This propose*, according to lobby goss’p, appears to have evok’d no dissect until it transpired that there w>3 a suggestion to attach a special sessional allowance of £IOO or 1150 eaob, it i 3 staked, to the appoi: t non's. Membsrs aro said to be up in arms against this portion of tho proposal, and moto that ono prom'se of support for the position is said to ha-e been withdrawn in oonsequeuoo of the suegjstod poymentp. It is understood that the fchrte tmm’rers selected for the proposed distinction wore Mr Platman ('ate Government whip) Sir W. Steward, and Mr Wiiford. This may account for the fact that tho rebellions spirit lately manifeslod by Mr Fla m in was not in evidence to day, he having, ia spite of expectations to the contrary, ca°t bis vote for the Government nominee fjr the Chairman ship. F.om th 9 hostility evi iced towa'ds the suggested allowances it seems -afa to say that the proposal has no chance of being carried, even if it is brought f jewa-d, wbioh is now bardly likely. THE RECIPROCITY TREATY.
The tenor of lobby ta’k to-day oa tee suggested treaty makes it pretty oertiin that the proposals have no chance of being oarried by the House. As one member put it to me,-The treaty is as dead as Julius Caesar.” Ministers, as well as several private members, bave riceived numerous telegrams to-day from all parts of the colony, expressing the strongest disapproval of the agreement, and affirming the desirableness of its rejeo ion, NEW GOVERNMENT WHIP,
ft is understood that Mr Colvin, mem her for Bailer, is to sucioed Mr Flalman as Government Whip.
