Mr Justice Edwards was occupied in Auckland Supreme Court yesterday in hearing the appeal of a man nainad Leonard Adams against the decision of Mr Dyer, S.M , lining him £.lO on a charge of obstructing the foothpath in Vulcan Lane. The appeal was based on the con* tention that the facts did not justify a conviction. In the course of argument His Honor said that the legislature would, he believed, soon alter the state of the law in regard to street betting. The legislature ought to say that if any person wiio is a bookmaker, or reputed book-, maker, was found lounging about the streets with other people the onus must be thrown on him to show that he is there for a proper purpose, failing which it

would be left to bo presumed he was there for an improper purpose If a man, day after day, haunted streets known to be the haunt of reputed bookmakers, and could show no apparent good purpose, His Honor would think it would be inferred that he was a bookmaker. A decision was reserved.
