THE DUTY ON POTATOES.
'(Special to Gisborne Times.) Wellington, last uight. Tho advisableness of removing the duty off potatoes immediately was brought under tho notico of the Minister of Labor by> deputation of Wellington restaurant War* f Pora to-day. Tho deputation pointed * out the hardships to trade generally Dy tho imposition of this duty. The Hon. J. A. Milloe said tho hardships did not press on tradesmen alone, but on every oonsumsr. Ho would bo only too glad if ho could do anything in the direction of removing tho duty this session, but onoo tho question of tacit! revision was before the Houso there would be a request for rnauy other Poem to bo plaeed on the Lee list. This question must therefore bo deferred until tho Government were in a Position j 0 present a comprehensive of tariff revision.
gjfYANTED A SCHOOL OF COOKERY A plea for the establishment of a school rf cookery on the Hdo of ibo German State system, whioh issues first, bcck nd, avid third grade cortifioates in cookery, was made by a deputation of Wellington ro ataurant keepers, who waited on the Minister of Labor this afternoon. Tais plea was made mainly for the protect on of •he trade. It was stated that a man who Was BDgaged as rouseaboui in a city hotel oould go up country and beocmo-a so3ond cook. Ho learned to cook pot does without salt, spoilt a joint or two, and then returned to the city and bccnmo u o' - ef. The Minister replied (ha! this was a matter more for the Labor Department, as tho former had already established tcohnioal schools throughout the oolony. He had no doubt that if tho deputation made representations to tho Education Department it might start classes in cookery as a oemmanoement to sec how ii would work, and later on a more comprehensive scheme might be evelyed. A member of (he deputation : Wo think it is really a matter for the Ho ilih Depart ment to protect the public. (Laughter.)
