PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT Received 10.11 p.m., August 27 London. August 27
There are seven British battleships and two large cruisers helpless through damage. Tho Spectator, discussing the question of an Australian navy, asks : “ Had the only soldiers in Australia been British regulars where would the colonial oontiugents have coma frem for the Bier war? A local navy may be of little use at the start, but it would be no handicap and it would improve in size and quality, and pave the way for soma joint system of Empire drfence. Whatever the strategical objections, tho Motbe laud’s duty is to encourage, not throw cold water on Australia's desire to take an aotive part in her own defenoe. A corporate feeling throughout tho Empire cm only arise out of the prosperity and vigor of its separate parts. The result of consolidation will be aided rather than hindered by the rise of parts to a higher level of publio duty.”
