As regards manual training, including handiwork, Auckland is considerably ahead of New South Wales. A prosecution, tho first of its kind in Auckland, undor section 23, sub-section 1, of too Alcoholic L’quor Sales Control Act, 1695, was brought ugainst a commercial traveller at the Police Court. The section provides that orders fur liquor shall not bo received or solicited within a no-licer.se

Mr MeVeagh pleaded guilty on behalf of the defendant. It was a fact that defendant did receive on order for stout and boor. Ho bad gono to tbs house to collect an account due to him. He had
not solicited, and said ho could not ask for
an order. He was given a signed order. Mr Kettle, S.M., said ho would accept the statement of defondant that the order waa

An incident of the previous case was that the husband of the woman who ordered the beer from defendant was a prohibited person, and in consequence proceedings were taken against her, on tire ground that she procured liquor for her husband, and supplied him with liquor. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Mr. S. Mays, who conducted the prosecution, did not call evidence but said that defendant had allowed four dozen pints of liquor to pass through the hands of her husband. There was nothing to prevent him from taking and drinking any of the liquor. It was the settled law that to incite under similar circumstances meant to tempt, and on the interpretation of the word a conviction had been recorded in the case, Police v. Ilogg. Mr Cotter submitted that there wits nothing for him to answer. He emphasised the point that the Magistrate had already mentioned, as to whether the fact that one member of a family was prohibited debarred the other members of the house from having beer in the homo.
