With the exception of sentencing one prisoner, the eriminal sittings were brought to a olosa to day. Edgar Turner, who had been found guilty on a previous charge of forgery, was sentenced to twelve months. William Thompson was found guilty of shooting with intent at Kaitangata, and sentence deferred. Thomas Hornley and William MoNamara were found guilty of entering and stealing rabbit skins and horse hair, and eaeh sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Obas. Cole, charged with receiving property knowing it to have been stolen, was acquitted. Christchurch, last night.
An inquest was held this afternoon concerning the death of the man who was found on Sunday hanging from a tree on the Governor’s Bay road. A verdict of suicide was relumed. The body has not yet been identified. Greymoutb, last night.
A man named Joseph Hunter, a wharf laborer, was badly injured while working on the s.s. Arahura to day. He was working down in No. 2 hold when a heavy chain sling was thrown down, striking him on the head, knooking him senseless. He sustained a nasty out on the head and face. ;
Hokitika, last night.
The barn and sheds of David Bradley, farmer, Arahura Valley, were completely burned down last ovening. A young man named George Henbam, was arrested today on a charge of having set fire to them.
