BOXING.

PRESS ASSOCIATION Wellington, last night, An offioial welcome was accorded visiting representatives to the Boxing Championship. Mr McVilly, the president of the local centre, said tho support received for the present contests had exeseded anticipations. The Hon. Mr Miller expressed pleasure at being present te meet the visiting athletes. He was pleased to eoe that stops to have this branch of sport p'aoed under one governing body had been a success, He himself took great intereet in cloan sport, and the knowledge of the science which enabled a man to take his own part was to be commended. To take part in a boxing contest necessitated a hesl'.hy body, and consequently a healthy mind ensued. Ho hoped the present championships would be the foreruuner of furlhsr successful contests. Mr W. G. A'aok (Christehutob) declared the prejudice against boxiog contests had been removed, and ho believed the present championships would be contested by the best team of boxers ever got together in the colony. New Zealand, as compared with Australia, lacked competent instructors, but the disadvantage in this respect was to some extent compensated by the strength and stamina which were possessed by New Z islanders. A team was being rent to Australia to contest tbe championships there, and if they were successful in the bantam and light-weights there he was positive the colony possessed two of the best men in the world in their respective c'a^ses.
