Macßarlane), in bis opening address, pointed to tho need for revision of tho tariff, and said ho was astonished at tbo statement by Cu-toms Department that the general revision was not contemplated, and that only au alteration of duties on certain articles was in tended. Dealing with tho reciprocity question, ho advocated reciprocal trade throughout tbo British Empire, arid said many of them wi re converts to Mr Chamberlain’s proposals, It would bo unwise, ha thought, at present to support a rnoiprooal treaty with any -ionniry not under the British flig. Dr. Bun ford -piki of the urgent neceseitv for c imp efon of tbo North Island Main Trunk line at tbo earliest possiblo mommS. It was a groat national work. Mr Massey, M.H.R ,in the eourso of his remarks, said it wa< the duty of Parliament to insist on getting details of public expenditure. Speeches woro also delivered by other Auckland members and the Mayor.
