The lecture “ Character Sketches from Charles Dickens ” given by the Rev. D. Parry at the Baptist Tabernacle last evening attracted a fairly large audience, hut the attendance was nothing like what the merits of the entertainment deserved. His Worship the Mayor presided and in

opening the proceedings referred to the popular nature of the subject of the great work done by Dickons, whose writing In,id been most beneficent to the British Empire. Mention was also made by the Mayor of the object of the lecture, which was in aid of the Nicolas fund. The lecture proved an intellectual treat, and wo very much doubt if any one present last evening ever heard a more faithful exponent of Dickens. The impersonations were most cleverly pourtrayed, and the utmost attention was held throughout. The light of the shade of the characters introduced was given with excellent effect and the lecturer was many times heartily applauded for his efforts. .Several musical numbers were given during the evening. Miss Bedstone sang “ Ora Pro Nobis ” in a most successful manner and Mrs Rhinosmith was - heard to full advantage in

“ Tli* Celestial Choir.” Miss Parker presided at the piano. The entertainment proved a most successful one and the wish was generally expressed that Mr Parry would see his way to repeat it at an early date,
