Iho night of Jane 25th Harry Kendall Thaw, son of a Pittsburg mnlti-millicnairr, shot and instantly killed Stanford Whit 1 ', one of America’s moat prominent architect?. The revelations with regard to the affair created a great sensation. Sinnford White was that at Madison Square Roof Garden, fie bad private apariments, in which itwas' hiß habit, it is stated, to entertain his numerous oborus girl acquaintance?. The man who ehet him, Harry Thaw, married sometbirg moro than a year ago . the beautiful Evelyn Neßbit, a chorus girl and protege of Sanford White. The marriage, while it shocked Thaw’s fain ly, was apparently a happy odo. It is now charg'd that Sianftrd White pursued Mrs Thaw with his attention?, and that Harry Thaw was praot’oaily insane with jeal u-y TbawdfC’ares bis defsnoe will r.oi bo insanity, but so far he has made no slat ments a? to what his defence will be. Thaw was prominent among tbo gilded youth of the laud before his marriage, and had loog been desperately infatuated with Evelyn Nesbit. Ho followed tbo girl to Europe, and travelled about wirh her for tome time. On reluming to Now York the couple were denied tho hospitality of a leading hotel. Fina'ly Harry Thaw's mother wired them to come to Piltrburg, where the couple were married in her presence. There is no ebargo that Mrs Thaw has been unfaithful, but there are endless rumers as to tbo bad behavior of Stanford Wbilo. This mm, a prineo in hiß profession, dosigood many of the most famous building* of tho present day. It appears Thaw had him shadowed by detectives constantly for the past year, and private deteotives and actresses have vied with oaoh other in reporting for publioation soandalous conduct of the archi-
tect’s privato life. It is impossible to establish tho truth pf half jthat has been told Conservative opinion is that although White was not a moral man, ho was not tbo moral monster ho has been depiotod. The Society for Prevention of Vice reports as to orgies carried on in his rooms, but was not ab!o to obtain suffiffoot evidence to warrant his anort. The papers are filled with descriptions of Thaw’s life in prison, with p'etures of Mra Thaw’s lovely young fac?, and with dreadful stories and hints of the depravity of both prominent aotors in tho tragedy. There was apparently no immediate provocation for the shooting, so oon* jooturo has'a wido field.
