SIR JOSEPH WARD.
PUBLIC RECEPTION. I'UKSS ASSOCIATION Auokland, last night. A deputation of tho Auckland Advisory Board of tho Liboral and Labor Fedoration welcomed Sir josoph Ward this morn-ii-g. Tho deputation expressed confidence **' that Sir Joseph and his oolloaguos and supporters in Parliament would continue to carry ont tho wise and bonefioent policy inaugurated by Mr B illanoe, and so sue osssfully developed and oxlonded under Mr Seddon's Premiership, to tho advance mont of the best interests of tho oolony and the lasting benefit of tho people. .Replying, Sir Josrph Ward endorsed the polioy of having advisory boards of the Liberal and Labor Federation in osob province, similar to tho Board formed here.
A large publio gathering was held at 12 80 p.m. at tho Municipal Chambers, when the Mayor piosentod Sir Joseph Ward with an address of welcome, in wbioh special reference was made to the good wo;k dono by Sir Josoph whilo absent from the colony, notably at the Postal Conference. Sir Josoph Ward expressed very warm thanks for tho welcome. Referring to the mention in the address to bis so. vices as Colooial Trotsuror, Sit Josoph Ward sa ; d he had seen a statement published that ho was likely to go in for a wild scheme of public borrowing, involving five to twenty millions. No ouo should bo insane enough to think of such a thing. Ho had never advocated borrowing beyond tho capacity of the country, and tho idea of a five million loao, or oven a tsvo million loan, was unwise, Ho bad not altered his ideas in this matter. Tho policy of his colleagues and himself wou'd be modest and moderate ; at the same time, thoy would give effect to a progressive polioy for the people and country. He reforrod to tho grave responsibility of his position, and urged the people in a fair-minded way to 1 wait until tho polioy of tho new Govern- ‘ ment bad been submilted. If it was not . satisfactory they oould put in better men.
