THE EXHIBITION.
SHOULD GISBORNE BE REPRE* SENTED.
The question of Gisborne’s represents'
tion at the forthcoming exhibition in Christchurch was brought up a! the meeting of the Borough Council last evening.
Or Miller said that the Borough was, according to the minutes, pledged to give £IOO, but there had been a misunderstanding in the matter, a? the County Council had not contributed as it was statEd they would do, and the Harbor Board had only voted £SO. He thought the Council should get out of the difficulty in the quicktst manner possible. He preferred to see the Council pay up and show nothing rather than that they should send an exhibit whipb would be laughed at.
Tho Mayor admitted that there would bo some difficulty in getting the distriot properly represented, but they should try aud have something done. He had taken a spacs himself, and would do wbat he cou’d.
Cr Hardittg was disappointed in the support given by those interested in the agricultural industry. Ct Whinray said the meeting hold some time ago was largely at’.ended, and the feeling expressed was that the district should be represented. Exhibits of timber, honey, and wine were prom’ged, and there were codections of photographs and paintings which cpald be secured. The thing should not be allowed to fall through, If be were a wealthy man he would see it ttnoigh himself, and he was assured that it on y waiit-d to be pu-tied io ba brought to a successful issue. Tbe ( altitude lakan up by ih«i Cooniy C .unc 1 was not a right one.
The Mayc r said that there would be a mte iDg of the Chamber of Commerce at an early date, and the sufjsct oooli then be considered. He invited all the Councillors to bB present at that meeting. Cr Mi-ler urged that the Oouocil should net leave the maiter in abeyance, but should ho assured that the distriot would be worthily’ represented. “ Cr Lysnar said they should wait and see how things shaped. If they could not secure ssmrance of support they should drop it. Tee trouble was that there was no one Inktug an inteiost iu the matter. After further discussion it was decided to appoint a tub commiitee, consisting of Grs Mil cr. Whiutav, Lysoar and the Mayor, to meet tho Chamber of Comme ci and others aud report to a future mceiiDg.
