Tho Supremo Court criminal sessions opened to day before tho Chief Justice. In his charge to tho Grand Jury nis Honor said there had boon no diminution in tho quantity of crimo in tho district. None of tho thirteen charges on the calendar, however, were serious, except perhaps one. There were, however, some charges that wore universal, and showed a depraved moral stato of those persons accused if tho evidoneo against thorn was to bo believed, charges which in tho old form of tho English indictment ought not to bo named among Christians. Sentences wero passod as follows Patrick Kearney, obtaining money by means of valueless cheque, four months; John William Lucas, burglary, niuo months ; William Joliu Lower, forgery and uttering, twelvo months; Percy Burt, theft, four months.
Mrs Harding’s private hotel and confectionery store, ono of Clock s buildings, Petone, was partially do* stroyed by firo early this morning. The contents woro insured for £250 in tho Stato ollics, and Clock’s buildings for £ISOO in tho New Zealand office. Tho inmates had a narro w escape.
Westport, last night. The bodies of three of the four men drowned on tho Karamea bar have now boen recovered. Transon’s remains wero found'yesterday. Foil ding, last night. Professor Kirk, Government biologist, purchased 2d tons of Northern Star potatoes on Saturday from Henry Burrell for distribution amongst the Maoris. These potatoes are portion of a crop yielding an average of 15 tons per aero on 10 acres, grown by Mr Burrell, and sprayed six times with tho Bordeaux mixture recommended by tho Agricultural Department.
