THE SCHOOLS MATCH. The annual rnaioh botweon tbo Napier Hgb School and tbo Gisborne Public School was played at the Victoria D 'main on Saturday afternooD, in tho presEnoo of a largo number of spectators. Tbo following wero tbo trams : Napier : Smith, Paitorson. Sargisson, ,
Balionr, Gibbonr, Hannah, Bishop, Exoll, Davis, McDonald, McCartney, Toornton, Bees, Haiker, and Siewatt (captain). Qiaborno : Stubbs, Wright, Butler, Campbell, Luttrell (captain), Fromm, Pollook, Wi, I. Dunlop, B. Moorr, Jobson, Beere, Birrell, J. Dunlop, and Bright. Napier kioked off with the sun in their
front, and qatckly assumed the aggressive, several fine forward rushes carrying play dangerously n:ar tbo local goal lino. Stubbs oemo to the rescue, and found the
line with a well judged kick. Pollook acd Luttrell also showed up iu the early stages for sound defensive wotk. Napier bad much the best of tbe spell, but made a great m'slake iu keeping tbe play close, as they were undoubtedly superior in open wotk, tbeir backs handling tbe ball olsverly, especially Hannah and Bishop, and tbeir forwards showing belter condi-
tion than the local lads. Close on halftime Pollock secared from a aorum ia froot of tbe Napier goal, and srnt tbe Iratber out to Luttrell, who dashed over and soored. Campbell kicked a goal. Throughout the second half Napier, playing with tbe sun at their baoks, made strenuous efforts to equalise matters, but tbe local defence was impregnable. The oatobing and kioking on both sides were decidedly good, which gave evidence of ca-eful ooaohiog. The local boya were almost in a seoond time, Campbell making a fine dash up tbe line, but did not pass soon enough, Thera was no further eoore.
For Napier the backs all played well, Bishop and Hannah playing brill'antly. The forwards wero a fine lot, and gave their opponents a warm time. Stewart on the wing was tbe most conspicuous The local forwards were a rather light lot, and relied muoh on iheir backi. Wi I. Dunlop, and Moore «o:ked moat oensistently. Pollock, Luttrell, Campbell, and Stubbs were the pick of the backs, although all played well. Mr W. Howard held the whistle, and Messrs Lear (Gisborne) and A. DuDn (Napier) held the line flags.
TE AUTE V- POVERTY BAY,
The above match was p'ayed at the Viotoria Domain on Saturday afternooD, resulting in a viotory for the former by 10 points to 6, The following were the teams: —
Te Ante : Wi Bangi, Grinnell, Halbert, Broughton, Erekana, Bongo, Brown (oapt), Mutn, Heke, Penr, Pine, Hire, Riwai, F'iday, Delamere. Poverty Bay : Riddell, Robinson, Hay (oapt.), Nolan, Rowe, Poflatt, Poulsen, Parker, Blair, Hansedi Well?, J jbnston, Bt' wart, Thompson, Swann, From the whistle it war seen that the teams were very evenly matched, and a bard and evo'tiog game followed until no side was sounded. Te Ante had the advantage of weight in the luck, but this wae counterbalanced by the splendid work of the Poverty Bay hookers, Parker and Blair, who secured possession os often as their opponent 3 . Poulsen aod Rowe were associated in some neat pssiing, but the other backs did not manage to Btrike form, and the whole back machinery wos evidently out of gear. This oould not be said of the forwards, who worked as one man, Af6er give-and-take play in midfield Parker Turei broke away from tho line, and carried play right to the To Auto goal line, where he passed. Fine tackling by Broughton and Rangi saved. Poverty Bay continued the attack, and neat passing between Wells, Puflstt, Hay, and Robinson almost saw the latter over, Grinuell throwiog him into touch at the corner. Brown broke away, Dotting in nioely, and Halbert further improved by a judicious kick. Fast open play followed, each side throwing the ball about. The ball was kicked out to Robinson and Grinnell, and the two speedy wings dashed for it. Grinnell seoured and gave Erekana an opening, the latter, after a 000 l feinfmg run, giviDg Pine a clear run in. Ecekana kicked a splendid goal. Te Aute continued to pres?, and a good pass from Wi Friday to Pina saw the latter almost over again ; but RobinsoD, who was BbowiDg sound defence, grassed his man splendidly. The spell ended without farther ecore. The game throughout the a-cond half was faster than eve>-, there not being a dull moment’s play. Parker Turei, Swann, and Wells shone out in lioe work, and made some good openings, but the combination of the Te Aute backs was too good. Brown got the ball out to Halbert, who olevely j.rked through several opponents, and passed to Erekana, who transferred back to Brown, giving the latter a dear run in, eooring behind the posts, Erekana-again improved the tcore. Poverty Bay livened up towards the doße of tho game, and kept play on thoTe Auto Bide cf the h ilfway-lioe. From a line-out near the corner Thompson got over, but the kick was futile. Poverty Bay continued to attack, and Stewart got over. The k : ck at goal Bgivn failed. There was no farther soore, and the gams ended as For the loeera Riddell, at full-baok, justified his inclusion, playing a fine game. Rowe and-’Pbulsen played up to their Club form, aod got through a largo amount of work. The forwards on eaoh Bide played splendidly. Paiker Turei was in fine form, and played ihe best forward game we have seen on a looal ground. Amongst the Te Aute backs Erekana played an almost faultless gam», while Grinnell, BrougbtoD, and Halbere.and Browo played well. Ronga was suffering from a bad leg, and did not show up ai well as usu» , although his defence was sound. Delamere | made a first appoßranoe this season, and I did some very usoful line, kicking, Mr W Gibsoo controlled tUe game in a very tfficient manner, and Messrs O. Hamilton and Andrews (Secretary of the Hawke 1 - Bay R ferees’ AsßOoiatioD) held the lice-flags.
