A MEMORIAL.

MPRESSIVE UNVEILING CEREMONY.

A most impressive ceremony wbb that whiob took place at Te Rare, Waikanas, yesterday, when the monument to that splendid chieftainess, Eiperata Kahutia (mother of Mrs Carroll) wbb unveiled by His Worship the Mayor of Gisborne, in the presence of a large and representative gathering, amoDget those present being the Hon, J. Carroll and Mrs Carroll, Colonel ..... Porter, the Mayoress, and Wi Pete, The visitors were welcomed by the well-known ehiefs, Noa Whekaatere and Hapi Kiniha. The monument, designed by Mr W. J. Helyer, of Wellington, is a beautiful one ; the base is of blueßtone, and the body of the finest Italian marble, surmounted by the figure of an angel, the right hand pointing heavenwards and the left hand holding a oroes pressed olosely to tbe breast. In death, Wi Pere in his address ’ emphasised, the emblematio representation of the right hand was as Rlperata was in her life, ever pointing heavenwards. The Hon. J. Carroll gave a tonohing address , in Maori, makiog eloquent reference to their duty there that day, The Mayor paid a very - high tribute to tbe estimable qualities of tbe lady whose memory was being honored j he gave pleasing incidents of bgr life, and narrated how well efts had fought for tbe rights of her people, and how her word " was always accepted. Captain Tucker, who had to attend a meeting fjs ohajrman of the Cook County Gouupil, Bent an apology through tbe Mayor, and also a written panegyrio of the deceased, in the ocureo of whioh ho stated that Mrs Riperata Kahutia was usually suobessful in the Land Court; 1 , for the reason that’she never asked more than was just. The monumeDt was draped ia flags and native mats, and ou the un veiling taking p.aoe Colonel presented the oolora to Ms Townley, who eaid he would alwavs treasure them. Addresses were also given by Wi Pore. Hapi Kiniha, and Noa Whakaatere.
