The extraordinary heavy flood in tho Waipaoa river was uufortunato for tho contractor, as tho central piers having only just boan erected, were without bracing or bolting, tbc oon'.raotor losing aoroo 1800(6 of worked ironbark. _To stondy tbo remaining portions of bis piers, be ran out guy ropos to tbs present bridge. This was contrary to specifications (there was not, however, any risk to tho old struoturo wbatover), and ho has been direotod to remove the guys at tbo earliest opportunity. “ I am unable at present to report fully on the damage occasioned by tbo late flood. GisborneWairna road: Numerous slips from Gentle Annie all through. Gishorno-Mo-'are road impassable to wheel troffio. Part of embankment washed out at new bridge, and numerous slips southwards. The Motu ro»d I have not yet had particulars of. The Arai road has also suffered severely. Tho Gisborne-Tolago road, three bad slips, but not otherwise much damaged ; but north of Tolego suffered at tho old bridge sites. Tho back roads to Lowden Hills and Arakihi I have at present ao word, but anticipate numerou3 slips, as the ground is bad. Tho Wnimata road has several bad slips, and tho fords, of course, are blooked at approaches. With regard to the Kinaokouao road, I expect to get word shortly, So far as I can asoertain, no ioss to auy extent has occurred to bridges generally. I bavo taken in hand the repairs of tho moro important routes, Bnd hope soon to get the ordinary traffic through on all main lines.
