HEADMASTER’S REPORT,
Tho following roport was roooivod from tho headmaster :—" Tho school olosod for Itio usual midwlntor holidays on Fridayi Juno 29th, and ro-oponod on Monday last, July 16)b. Tho attendanoo for tho wook has neoenaanly boon bad owing to tho storm. On Tuesday I took upon myself tho responsibility of sending homo daring tho morning all obildron who live tho river and closing tho sohool at 12, on account of tho dangerous state of tho rivor and tho oxtromely low attendance. Tho averago for tho quarter ending Juno 30th was 820. Two pupil toaohors havo beon absent this week, ono by instruction from the hoalth offioor and the other onaooouni of tho storm. I wish to draw tho attontion of tho oommittoo to tho plan adoptod by ono parent to avoid tho compulsory olauso of the Sohool Attendance Aot, i. 0., to send his ohildron to a privato sohool. Tho question for your oommittoo to decide is whothor they shall allow parents to defeat tho law in this respect, seeing that tho romedy is in thoir own hands. I do not wish to suggest that tho oommittoo should attempt to take ohildron away from othor sohools, but they have it within thoir power to compel regular attondanoo at whatever sohool tho ohildron may attend (soo Sohool Attendance Act, clause 4). Tho now sohool is nearing oomplotion, and tho contractor expects to have it roady by August Ist. Tho Board should bo nppronohod for instructions ro occupation. I wish to recommend that three stool grating sciapors and throo door mats bo obtoinod for tho throe entrances. Throo now mats are also required in tho infant sohool. Thirty frames are required for timo'tables and work shoots. Thoy can bo obtained for Jo 10s, or 2s 4d each." Discussion took place in regard to the appointment of a Truant Inspector, but no action was taken. SECONDARY CLASSES.'
