THE BELIEF MOVEMENT. ntaaOtOHM The public meeting oalled for yosterday morning at 11 o’clook was largely attended, and all present expressed the warmest sympathy with the efforts being made to provide for the relief of sufferers by tho flood. The Mayor explained the object of the mooting, and Captain Tuckor, on behalf of country residents, acknowledged the kindness of townspeople in coming to the assistance of country srtilere, He wae willing '0 give £SO towards the fund. Mr J. W. Bright considered tho lossoe had been largely exaggerated. Ho suggested that a committee should be set nj ID enquire into the Josses. Mr J. B. Kells said sbtro were a number of small settlers who would feel tbi lose severely. The amount) raised oouh bo drown on pro rata when the losses were ascertained. His firm wore proparod to follow Captain Tucker’s lead and put down £SO if requited. With regard to Captain Nicolas, tho employees of Common, Shelton and 00. wero getting up a subsoription, and it was ospeoted £BO would bn raised. Mr W. D. Lysnar considered that help was badly required, aod nothing should bo done to deter peoplo f:om giving. Ho mentioned several deserving cases which bad oorne under his notice. Mr F. J. Morgan approved of the suggestion of a coamiitieo which could report fully to another meeting. If they asked people to put down their names uow it might detract from the Nicolas fund, which he considered was the most W. L Clayton said the Nicolas fund should be made''the Aotoa fund. Kennedy said that charity commenced at home, and no effort should bo encouraged which would divort the relief intended for tbo family of Captain Nicolas, who had boon for many years in their midst. It would bo a big order to take up a subscription list for every wreok on the ooast. Already £2OO had been subscribed for the Nicolas family. Mr T. J. Dickson • ondoreed Mr Kennedy’s remarks. Mr W. Petite was pleased to seo tho great amount of sympathy shown towards tho Nicolas fond, the sucoess of wbioh was assured. Ho did not favor the suggestion that there should be a pro rata distribution of tbo flood funds. They should put down their names for what they could afford, and lei the committee in their wisdom dispose of any surplus, This
would bo found to bo a most satisfactory wav of working. Tho Rov. H. F. Kennedy, W D, Lysnar, J. B. Kells, Symes, and Bright, Sub committees were appointed as follows Makarnka to Waerenga-it hika: Captain Tuoker, Messrs J. B Kollo, J. 0. Field, and W. D. Lvsnar. Ormond to Wanronga a-hika: Messrs Caesar and Bright. Patntaht: Messrs Tuaby, Kenna.ty, and Symes. Mr Iloldon said that ho was prepared to give £SO to tbo flood fund ou tho same lines as Captain Tucker.
