The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, JULY 19, 1906. AFTER THE FLOOD.
The words “after tlio Food " can now, wo believe, be used with complete confidence that the distressing overflow of Tuesday last has run its course, and that in tho natural order of things it will be many years before there is such another devastating experience. Even yet it may be too early to speak with certainty, as we are well within the rainy month, and the surface water still lying about and the soakage which the ground has received would be ominous factors in the case of a continuance of rainy weather. There is need for congratulation that under such circumstances there was no loss of life, and | wo trust that tho exposure and arduous
experiences will not load to sorious result.). Thoso who have sufforod bo severely will have tho sympathy of all; Homo will ho more than oqual to tho strain, and will bo ablo to apply thomsolvoß to their tasks with ronewod energy and make light of thoir losses. Others no doubt need holp, and woaro sure that it will bo offered in a generous spirit. There is no good purpose to bo gainod by making tho results uppoar worse than they roally are, but the position requires to be , faced in a reasonable way. Tho lino spirit of comradeship that characterises | tho peoplo of this district has greatly tended to lesson tho weight of tho blow to individuals, and tho sturdy selfreliance will materially holp m the tiding over of difliculties. We appoal to thoao willing t.o holp in tho storm and Hood fund to do so without delay. A gonerous response has already been made, and all contributions, largo or small, will bo welcomed. One result of the llood has boon material damage to tho roads, and prompt representations should bo made to Government in tho hope of getting assistance in that direction.
