EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE
Tho 34!h annual roport of tho Welling-, ton district branch of tho Now Zealand Educational Institute states that there are 224 members on tho roll of tho Institute. During tho year IB mombors loft tho service of tho Education Board, and 62 now names had boon added to tho list. In fho Board’s sorvioo there are 838 ‘(.aohers drawing a salary of or more, uud of thoso 114 are not membors of tho institute. " Tho passing of tho Tnaohers’ Superannuation Act must be regarded as the most important event in the education year. After years of stronuous work by I the New Zealand Educational Institute and its component branches an Act has been passed making provision for teachers in their old age. The chief diftioultios that blocked the consummation of euoh an achievement worn, first, tho question of I aotuarial solvency; seooodly, the provision I of an adequate retiring allowance; thirdly, the claims of tho older membors of the sorvico. It may bo admitted that (ho first and second of these obstacles have besn satisfactorily overcome. Regarding the third, there is considerable difference of I opinion, Tho minimum retiring allowance of ;£52 is in maay ways an admirable I feature, but it oannot be gainsaid that had I baok service boon computed on 60>h’B of average salary instead of ISOsh’s the Act would have been more attractive to the older teachers in the service. As the Aot
stands at present it is a good measure for new entrants of both sexes and original women members."
