THE CENSUS.
' I’EESS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, last night. Tho Kegistrar-General has issued a preliminary return showing the population of the North, South, and Stewart Islands, and adjacent islands, and the increases made in the last twenty years. The figures are as follows : "North Island; 1886, 250,482; 1596, 1180,601; 1901, 390,571; 1906, 476,891. South Island: 027,092, 362,236, 081, 061, 411,258.
Stewart Island : 209, 252, 272, 2SB.
A table showing the numerical increases has been made up. The following are the results;
North Island : 1886-91, 30,963; 189196, 59,176; 1896-01, 49,940; 1901-06, 96,320.
South Island; 17,119, 17,525, 19,405. 25,597.
Stewart Island : Decrease 50, 20, 16,
The increase per cent, in the same period is even more interesting, as showing the remarkable advance made by the North Island:—
North Island: 1886-91, 36 per cent.; 1891-96, 21.03 per cent.; 1596-01, 14,66 per cent. ; 1901-06, 22.10 per cent.
South Island; 5.22 per cent., 5.08 per cent., 5.36 per cent., 7.75 per cent. Another table shows the distribution of the population and proportion of sexes as follows: — Counties : Persons 458,570, males 255, 078, females 203,492. Boroughs : Total 425,066, males 211,633, females 213,433.. Islands adjacent: Total 603, males 402, females 291. Kcrmadcc Islands; Total 5 males 3, females 2. On shipboard: Total 4305, males 3939, females 366. The- totals for the colony are: 888,639 persons, including 471,055 males, 417,584 females. North Island : 476,891 persons, 254,997 males, and 221,894 females South Island : 411,258 persons, 215,764 males, and 195,494 females. Stewart Island : 288 persons, 177 males, 111 females. Chatham Islands ; 197 persons, 114 males, 83 females. Kermadec Islands: 5 persons, 3 males, 2 females. Totals for colony: 888,639, including 471,055 males, and 417,581 females. These figures give the population exclusive of Maoris and the annexed Pacific Islands, but include halfcastcs and Chinese.
