NATIVE LANDS.
DEPUTATION TO MINISTERS, (Far Press Association.)
Wellington, last night
A deputation of native owners waited on tbe Premier, Native Minister, and Minis'er for Lands to-day to ask that a sitting of the Native Land Court might be held at Hastiogs as hcirly as possible for the purpose of partitioning the Wairam a block. These owners felt that they could not lease their land available to anyono but Mies Moinettzkagen, daugh'er of the original lessee. Six or roven thousand aoros would be resumed by natives. The balance of 22,000 acres they wished to lease. The petition oiroulrted in Hawke's Bay asking the Government to take the land for closer settlement was not bona fide.
The Native Minister said the general policy adopted by the Government in regard to resumption of native land was that the time bad come whon lands that were not required by naives for their own ehocld be acquired by the Crown, The Minister for Lands said if there wa3 any balance natives could not work themselves, it was the duty of the Crown to acquire it for closer settlement, as the desire of Europeans for land had muoh iooreased.
Tha Premier added that the Crown oould not stay its baud in the matter of purchase.
