By|«l«gr*Bh, Press Aas’n, Copyright Beoeived 8.23 p.m., Ju|y H. / Sydney, July 11. jiC' The Auckland team to-day playod the University representatives. The weather was fine. The attendance was five thousend, Gledding and Young stood out. The visitors showed improved condition compared with the opening game, but failed to hold their own sgainet the strong combination the University plsoed in the held. The resuit was laigely due to want of combination in the hick division, whose play was somewhat ragged. The AuokJnnders altered their formation, playing two five>eighths and ono wing forward Instead of two wingers. In the opening stages the looal team bad the bettor of the gw», Hughes scouring first try, which Wilkinson failed to convert. Shortly after ■holler secured a try, Wilkinson adding the extra points from a long plaoe. Even Play followed, daring which MoElhone’s eight elbow was twisted,- Ha-ris taking his p'aoe. Later on Tyler punted into the opeD, Smith followed up rapidly. Todd, scouring the ball from the scrum, floored for Auckland. His shot at goal was missed. &i »he V<o:ori-» Domain on Saturday, West End and Kuti.Oiiy Football Ombs Will try oonolnaiong in tba senior bannei championship, Should W«Bl End prove victorious they will have won the banner •Or tba season 1906, but they will by no means be allowed an easy viotory, as the •earn Ksiti-Gily is potting io tbe field is a very even ow, and judging by tbe min Der tbe Haiti City forwards Blood up to the beavy Coast vaDgoard they should be able to give their backs an opportunity of proving tboir worth. Considerable interest is being taken in this matob, and a good game should resnlt. It is donbtful whether West End oould have lowered the colors of the erack Coast team, but they will have an opportunity on Saturday of dispelling the dcubt. Exception has been taken by footballers generally to a remark in last week’s football notes, where a popular looal referee is laid to blow his whistle ones where mother referee would blow six times. This wm not intended io be deroga'ory in my way to other referees, but rather as a mild protest against the ultra-strict interpretation of the rales, whioh tends to msfeflbe play slow and o'ose. A referee brTm there to teaoh, but to control. In a properly regulated match the whistle ibould sound four times, at stated interrail, but apart from that the less whistle there is the belter the football.
