Under the present system of assessing land values, it is evident that many farmers, who have hitherto rightly escaped the incidence of land taxation, and who, just as rightly, should remain exempt, will be called upon to contribute to the land revenue in the near future. Not only has there been an enormous increase in the assessed values—largely on paper—of farming properties in New Zealand, but it has become plainly apparent that “ another turn of the screw ” is contemplated, with the object of substantially increasing the tax already paid into the Exchequer.—Farmers’ Weekly. Christchurch Truth states : “So China is boycotting New Zealand, and we never guessed ! Our amiable commissioner in the East has failod to got any Celestial merchant to exhibit bamboo fixings and lacquer fal lals at Q-. H. Munro’s great show because China is so annoyed at New Zealand’s £IOO poll tax, and the amusing thing is that the pig-tailed Celestial has been so eloquent about it that he has converted the amiable Gow and made him an earnest advocate—while ho is in China—of the let-’em all come policy that nearly ruined California and British Columbia. Fortunately the “say so” doesn’t lie with J. Graham Gow. The people of Now Zealand are quite satisfied if it either means the free introduction of Chinese or no Mongolian court at the Exhibition, to sacrifice the court with a glad heart and a choerful countenance. We can do without the Chinaman, educated or uneducated, in this country, be ho tourist, toa dealer, or coolie. Even if it meant tho failuro of the Exhibition altogether, wo would sooner not havo him.
